AI Excel Add-ins for Finance in 2026: What Each Does
An honest map of AI Excel add-ins for finance teams, grouped by job: productivity, document extraction, public-company data and diligence analysis.
“AI Excel add-in” now covers tools that have almost nothing in common beyond the ribbon. Before comparing them, sort them by the job they do. Most teams need one from each of two or three categories rather than the “best” one overall.
Category 1: productivity, formatting and Office linking
Macabacus and UpSlide are the incumbents. Both speed up formatting, auditing and the link between Excel models and PowerPoint decks. Macabacus is the analyst’s choice for shortcut-driven modelling; UpSlide is the enterprise choice for brand compliance and content libraries. Both have added AI features at the edges (slide generation, formatting suggestions) but the core is deterministic automation, which is what you want for formatting. Deckary is the newer, cheaper option focused on charts and Excel-to-PowerPoint links with Mac support. Arixcel is the specialist for formula auditing.
Choose from this category if your pain is the last hour of every deliverable.
Category 2: document extraction and tie-out
DataSnipper dominates audit: snip a figure from a PDF into a cell and keep the link to the source page. Dili and similar tools focus on extracting financial statements from unstructured documents into normalised Excel. These are about getting numbers into the workbook with evidence.
Choose from this category if your pain is data rooms full of PDFs and a need to show your working.
Category 3: public-company data
Daloopa maintains an AI-cleaned database of public-company historicals and pushes updates into models on earnings day. Capital IQ and FactSet plug-ins are the long-standing equivalents. Useful for equity research and public comps, irrelevant for private-company diligence where there is no database.
Category 4: general-purpose AI in the grid
Microsoft Copilot in Excel and a wave of “ChatGPT for Excel” add-ins let you ask questions about your data, generate formulas and explain existing ones. Genuinely helpful for ad hoc work; not built for a specific professional workflow, so output quality depends on how well you prompt.
Category 5: due diligence analysis
This is the newest category and the one with the least agreement about what “the tool” should be.
Cloud platforms (Finsider, Keye, Termina, PinpointAI) ingest a data room and return a draft QoE or FDD report. They are ambitious, priced for firms rather than individuals, and move the work out of Excel.
ZAF Tools is the Excel-native alternative: trial balance import and AI mapping, databook build, Quality of Earnings candidate detection, EBITDA bridge, working capital, management questions and commentary, all as formulas in the workbook, from $29 per month. It includes a Category 1 utility ribbon as well, which is why boutiques sometimes replace Macabacus with it, but its reason to exist is the analysis.
Choose from this category if your pain is the analyst-week between receiving a trial balance and having a databook with commentary.
A practical shortlist by team type
| Team | Likely stack |
|---|---|
| Investment banking, pitchbook-heavy | Macabacus or UpSlide, plus Copilot |
| Audit and assurance | DataSnipper |
| Equity research | Daloopa, plus a Category 1 tool |
| FDD boutique or transaction advisory | ZAF Tools, plus DataSnipper if audit-grade tie-outs are needed |
| PE deal team | ZAF Tools for first-pass diligence, Copilot for ad hoc |
| Large advisory firm with budget | A cloud QoE platform for drafts, ZAF Tools or Macabacus for the analysts |
Questions to ask any vendor
- Where does my data go, is it retained, and can I route calls through my own cloud tenancy?
- Are outputs formulas or values? Can a reviewer trace a number to its source?
- What does it cost per user per month, published, without a sales call?
- Does it work on my client’s file, or only on files it created?
- What happens when I stop paying? (Do my workbooks still open cleanly?)
